Valsad, also known as Bulsar, is a municipality in the Valsad district of Gujarat, India. There is a collectorate, a district court, and a police headquarters with a historic prison in this city. Valsad was historically a small town surrounded by forest, with teak production being a major regional industry.
Prior to the colonial era, it was a part of a regional kingdom. During the Bombay Presidency, it was made a district, and it was governed by Bombay State during the colonial era, following independence (prior to the creation of the state of Gujarat). Valsad is now a town populated by Gujaratis.
Gujarati is the main language spoken in and around town. Hinduism is the predominant religion in the region. Islam, Christianity, Jainism, and Sikhism are among the other minority religions. The name 'Valsad' is derived from the Gujarati word vad-saal, which means "hampered (saal) by Banyan trees (vad)" (the area was naturally rich in Banyan trees).
The Alphonso mango (known locally as Hapus), for which the city and surrounding areas were once famous, remains important to the local economy. Many villages in the Valsad district have mango orchards, which are the only source of income for many villagers. The Hapus mango is well known among mango lovers all over the world for its sweet taste.
According to the most recent census, the population of Valsad is approximately 145,592. Valsad district is home to well-known names such as Vapi (the Gujarat Chemical Hub), Gundlav GIDC, Killa Pardi, Umbergaon, and Bhilad-Sarigam (The Industrial Estates). Near Valsad are the union territories of Daman and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, both of which are popular tourist destinations.
